The Lumpini Thai Boxing & MMA Club

The Lumpini Club was established by Sean Toomey in London in 1990, and has since gained a reputation for great fighters and a friendly gym. Many past students of Lumpini, have gone on to open very successful gyms around the United Kingdom. After relocating to the New Forest, Hampshire in 2002, Sean Toomey opened Lumpini Hampshire in New Milton, with classes in Lymington and Dibden and in January 2007 we moved to our new permanent facility at the Ocean Gym, Southampton.

Former students of Lumpini have gone on to open other gyms around the country, including; Keddles Gym, Lumpini Crawley and Lumpini Kent.

The club originally taught just Thai Boxing, but now also teaches MMA, BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and Boxing. We welcome not only those wishing to compete, but also those wanting to learn Thai Boxing, MMA, BJJ or Boxing for fitness or self defence.

Classes are held for all abilities with both male and female instructors.

We have a strong fight team of both Thai Boxers and MMA fighters, details can be found on our fights page, we are also the club winners of the UK MMA League 2008-2009 and Runners Up 2009-2010. We also hold regular seminars, social events and training trips to Thailand.

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

Thai Boxing is the ancient martial art and national sport of Thailand. It is known as the eight weapon fighting art and involves the use of kicks, knees, elbows and fists. To be a Muay Thai fighter requires much courage, endurance, stamina, knowledge and skill. Unlike many other martial arts, Muay Thai is a full contact sport and professional fighters only wear boxing gloves for protection.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

MMA is as the name suggests a mixture of the martial arts. Competitors in MMA must have both strong stand up fighting skills as well as ground skills. In MMA you will learn the striking arts of Boxing and Thai Boxing, but also wrestling, Ju Jitsu, Judo and submission techniques. Fighters compete in a eight sided cage with just grappling gloves for protection.

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling but especially ground fighting. It was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century, which was itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese jujutsu. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, Sparring  ('rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition

What does the training involve?

Muay Thai, MMA and Boxing training is a fantastic way to improve fitness, calorie burn, tone, build strength and power, relieve stress and learn self defence.

Punch Bags, pad work, shadow boxing, circuit training and sparring (optional) all form part of Muay Thai training, with the above and grappling, submissions ans takedowns forming part of MMA.  99% of people train for fitness and self defence, at Lumpini Gym we ensure that everyone is welcome whether they want to train for fitness or to compete.  As our gym is a full time, purpose built martial arts studio, we can offer different classes to suit different needs.  We have fully qualified and experienced instructors and teach in a clean, modern and well equipped facility.
